By faith he dwelt in the promised land as a stranger in a foreign country. He lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. ... All these people died in faith, without having received the things they were promised. However, they saw them and welcomed them from afar. And they acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. Now those who say such things show that they are seeking a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master. ... the LORD was with him and extended kindness to him, granting him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you. ... Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring.” So Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

for all the land that you see, I will give to you and your offspring forever. ... Get up and walk around the land, through its length and breadth, for I will give it to you.”

On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land—from the river of Egypt to the great River Euphrates—

And to you and your descendants I will give the land where you are residing—all the land of Canaan—as an eternal possession; and I will be their God.”

saying, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your only son, ... And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

the covenant He made with Abraham, and the oath He swore to Isaac.

You will show faithfulness to Jacob and loving devotion to Abraham, as You swore to our fathers from the days of old.

So when God wanted to make the unchanging nature of His purpose very clear to the heirs of the promise, He guaranteed it with an oath.
